The following article was written about CrossFit Charlotte in the South Charlotte Sports Report on July 30th, 2007. It is reprinted here with their permission.

CROSSFIT CHARLOTTE BRINGS A NEW KIND OF WORKOUT TO TOWN

Andy Hendel made it to the NFL due to hard work, commitment and desire to be the very best. Hendel entered North Carolina State on a lacrosse scholarship, but the team was shut down after his first year on campus. With experience in football, Hendel decided to walk onto the football squad. That decision and commitment to not give up on sports, led him to achieve All-American status for the Wolfpack.

Hendel graduated as one of the all-time tacklers at NC State as an inside linebacker. His senior year he was presented the Michael J. Hardy Award for being the player that displayed superior courage and performed above his ability. He was also named to the National Walk-On All American Team.

Hendel played professional football from 1984-87. He played two seasons in the USFL as a linebacker with the Jacksonville Bulls (1984-85), landing on the league’s All-Rookie team in 1994. From 1986-87, he played for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

Hendel turned to coaching following his playing career. Coaching a Western Kentucky, Cincinnati, Western Carolina and locally at Providence Day.

With the opening of CrossFit Charlotte, Hendel brings his love of working with young athletes to the South Charlotte community. Located at 600 West Charles Street in Matthews, CrossFit is quickly developing a reputation among area athletes as the place to be for a challenging workout.

Hendel develops a daily routine for the athletes and once they began it turns into a competition to see who can complete their workout in the fastest time. On the day The South Charlotte Sports Report visited the gym; ten male and female athletes from Providence High School and Providence Day were competing in a 1:00pm workout. The determination on each athlete’s face showed how us dedicated each were to being the very best.

A little more info on the nationally recognized CrossFit Program and how it can be applied by athletes of all ages.

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

The CrossFit program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. The same routine has been used for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts.

The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our terrorist hunters, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.

Thousands of athletes worldwide have followed CrossFit workouts posted daily on the website and distinguished themselves in combat, the streets, the ring, stadiums, gyms and homes.

CrossFit also offer seminars, trainer certifications, and training and regularly provide consultation services to athletic teams, coaches, and police and military agencies throughout the free world.

It’s important to note CrossFit works with young athletes, pre high school and teaching them the fundamentals of a conditioning program that is dedicated to enhancing athletic ability and injury prevention. This kind of specialization can only be found at the college level and beyond, but is available right here in Matthews!

2007 Fight Gone Bad for Prostate Cancer

Athletes for a Cure is a nation-wide (global?) organization that is raising money to help fight prostate cancer. Every year CrossFit holds an affiliate-wide fund raising event. Anyone wishing to compete simply gathers pledges from anyone they know. Then on Sept 29, head to CrossFit Charlotte and compete! It’s that simple.
